The #1 Reason Your MLM Business Isn't Growing (and Five Ways to Change That)

See the lonely hands in the picture above? Poor guy. He’s trying to grow an MLM business, maybe you are too, but he’s stalled. Bummer.

Growing your team is the name of the game in network marketing. Building a solid team of people who are business savvy and hard working is how you go from barely paying for date night to earning the big bucks and quitting your day job. If you can learn to attract people to your business, you’ll find great success in network marketing.

So why do so many people struggle to grow their multi-level marketing teams? Because they are confused about what they are really selling.

You know that skincare advocate who fills your newsfeed with before and after photos? Her business is stalled.

That fitness coach posting a hundred selfies of his six pack? He’s probably pretty frustrated.

But take either one of these two MLM entrepreneurs and teach them to invest in people and to sell a business relationship, everything will change.

When you are working with leads, it’s so important to be aware that you aren’t actually there to sell products or attractive compensation plans. You’re selling your personality, your mission, and the help you can offer. It’s about the relationship that the other person gains when they step onto the boat with you, THAT’s what is so attractive to people.

If you’ve been selling your company’s product catalog, the vacations that can be earned, or the car the company rewards, stop. Instead, start with these 5 ways to market yourself and grow your business.

Market yourself as an authority in the field. Not so sure you are an expert? Start educating yourself on both the industry you have joined (skincare, fitness, home goods, etc.) AND in marketing and sales. Specifically, get versed in MLM marketing. Look for free webinars and training and get a coach who can help you step up your game.

Change your message. If your social media feeds are full of product demos and your company’s compensation plan, it’s time to switch gears. Testimonials, practical marketing tips, and even third party content (i.e. articles from other websites or resources) are great content. Make a genuine connection with people and offer help taking their business efforts to the next level. It’s not to say you shouldn’t work on selling product or raising brand awareness, but this shouldn’t be the extent of your message.

Seek out other experts. There are two reasons for this piece of advice. The first is that it’s important to recognize the wisdom and expertise of others in the marketplace. Take notice of those who are killing it at this MLM thing and follow their social media accounts. Pay attention to what they post, how often they post, and when they post. Don’t copy everything they do; be teachable and original at the same time. The second reason is because you’ll want to build a social media following of people who are connected to your business and industry. Follow them and hopefully they’ll follow you back.

Revamp your website. Again, if your website is completely sold out to the MLM company you work for, it needs a makeover. Your message should be centered around what YOU have to offer and YOUR expertise and passion for helping others be successful. Make the connection first, then discuss the company you work with. This means your company’s logo should have a minimal to zero presence on your website.

Take stock of your own confidence. If the idea of marketing yourself vs. a company or a product just sent you running for some Pepto, it’s time to do some self examination. Confidence is essential to building this business. I’m not talking about vanity or ego, no one is really attracted to that. I’m talking about the kind of quiet confidence that says, “I have something valuable to offer the world and I don’t need anyone else to validate that”. This is serious stuff people, and there are some great resources out there for helping you build your confidence. This article by Chalene Johnson is just one of many. It’s ok if you struggle with confidence, most of us do, as long as you recognize your need to improve it and get to work.
